Five actions to get the job of your dreams

It’s true, finding a job is a full time job and that’s why recruitment agencies exist and why I’ve got a job! We hear from candidates all the time who know that they want to get a new job, but they haven’t spent time alone figuring out exactly what they want. Unfortunately these candidates tend to leave jobs a lot sooner and find themselves in a repetitive cycle trying to work out what to do. So save yourself time and take an hour out of searching job boards and do the below, it’ll make your life a lot easier in the long run!

Do a SWOT analysis on yourself

Identifying your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats can be a fantastic way of evaluating your current situation and where you can improve. Opportunities could include attending training courses to improve your skill set, an event that’s coming up that you can network at. Threats might be other people with a similar background to you that could be applying for similar roles – what can you do to put yourself ahead of the competition?

Evaluate your online presence

Have you ever googled yourself? Did you know that most recruiters and hiring managers will? Make sure that what they find is not detrimental to your career, before you start applying for roles! Also, if you want to get found on LinkedIn for relevant job roles, make sure you update your experience and job role on your LinkedIn profile so that you come nearer the top in searches.

Set goals and plan for the future

Knowing where you want to be in your career in two, five, ten years, will give you objectives to work towards. From there, you can then work backwards and figure out what you need to do to achieve this. If you go off track, you know it’s time to make a change.

Identify companies you want to work for

Apply to hiring managers or heads of departments within the teams that you’d like to work within (easy to find who these are either on the company website or LinkedIn), and not just when they’ve advertised a live role. Things change so quickly in recruitment so don’t wait for them to advertise the position. If you get in their first, you’ll be top of the pile when they do have a new role.

Find yourself a recruiter who knows their stuff

Like Reuben Sinclair, for example! Seriously though, recruiters can help make you aware of companies and opportunities that you would never have been aware of otherwise. The good ones will listen to what you want, explain why they think that a job/company could be right for you, and provide you with impartial advice without expecting anything in return.

If you follow the steps above you’ll be more focused in your approach and will be more likely to find a job that you’ll want to stay in for the long run.
