Government Relations Advisor
Up to £350 per day | Full-time temporary assignment
Anticipated duration: 12 months, with potential to extend to 18 months or become permanent
Location: London
Would you like to put your political engagement experience to work on issues that affect everyday lives, public services and economic opportunity?
My client is a major public service organisation whose work connects communities, supports businesses and enables access to employment, education and essential services. Operating at the intersection of infrastructure, public policy and service delivery, my client’s decisions have significance well beyond its immediate operations.
My client is seeking a Government Relations Advisor to help build political support for its priorities through a sustained programme of advocacy, parliamentary engagement and stakeholder activity. This is an opportunity to combine strategic thinking with practical delivery, working closely with senior leaders and influential political audiences.
The opportunity
You will help turn research, operational developments and investment milestones into compelling opportunities for political engagement. From arranging parliamentary events to preparing senior executives for public platforms, your work will help strengthen understanding, build support and protect my client’s reputation.
Your responsibilities will include:
-
Developing and coordinating an ongoing advocacy programme that builds support among political decision-makers.
-
Mapping influential stakeholders and monitoring the political calendar, identifying opportunities connected to research findings, project progress and service developments.
-
Creating and managing a substantial programme of visits that gives political stakeholders first-hand insight into my client’s work.
-
Coordinating engagement with cross-party parliamentary groups, scrutiny committees and relevant party spokespeople.
-
Preparing senior leaders for external speaking opportunities through tailored briefings, research and clear recommendations.
-
Delivering events ranging from focused stakeholder discussions to larger parliamentary receptions and engagement programmes.
-
Supporting business and media-facing events in the capital and elsewhere in the UK.
-
Developing trusted relationships with parliamentarians, regional elected representatives, government officials and counterparts in other cities.
-
Taking day-to-day responsibility for relationships with an assigned portfolio of national and regional politicians.
-
Mobilising support from external partners and responding constructively to challenge, while helping colleagues manage sensitive reputational issues.
What you will bring
Public affairs and policy experience across transport, rail and/or infrastructure is essential. You will understand the policy and political priorities affecting these sectors, with direct experience engaging relevant decision-makers in Westminster and Whitehall. This includes knowing which ministers, advisers, officials, parliamentary committees and cross-party groups to engage, and how to build support among them.
You will have experience in public affairs, political communications or advocacy, with a strong record of delivering parliamentary engagement campaigns and events.
You will also bring:
-
Experience working in a political setting and delivering advocacy across different audiences, including elected representatives and government officials.
-
A clear understanding of national policymaking, from development through to implementation, and how political engagement can shape outcomes.
-
An informed understanding of the relationship between central government, Parliament, devolved city leadership and regional scrutiny bodies, particularly in relation to infrastructure and public services.
-
Strong influencing and networking skills, with the ability to establish credibility and maintain productive relationships internally and externally.
-
Experience securing third-party support, addressing criticism and advising on engagement that strengthens advocacy while managing reputational exposure.
-
The ability to research complex subjects quickly and turn findings into concise, audience-specific briefings under tight deadlines.
-
Confidence contributing to senior management discussions, briefing executive-level decision-makers and participating in external political meetings.
-
A collaborative approach to working with senior colleagues and political groups.
-
Excellent written and verbal communication, sound judgement and composure under pressure.
-
Experience managing competing deadlines and shifting priorities within a busy team.
