How to lose staff and clients, fast.

Poor hiring decisions are common. But what sort of impact can that truly have on your business?

Poor hiring decisions are common. But what sort of impact can that truly have on your business?

Your team

If you’ve just hired someone, it’s quite likely that you’ve just said goodbye to a leaver. In itself, this can be a knock for your team. But an injection of fresh blood can absolutely fill that void. That is, unless your new hire is a bad fit. Whether it be cultural or technical fit, this will inevitably put pressure on the rest of the team (who, bare in mind, are still grieving the departure of their team-mate) in some way and they will, in the long run, lose respect for you for causing this. And this, my friend, is how the dominoes start to wobble…

Your clients

If you’re lucky enough to have happy clients, it’s probably because they’re receiving excellent service from an Account Manager whom they like and respect. As and when that superstar that they’ve come to know and love moves on to pastures new, they’re highly likely to start shopping around. Hire a dud replacement to look after their account and you’re done for.

You

Even when your direct report is great at their job, people management is challenging. But managing someone who isn’t good at their job, or someone with a bad attitude, or someone unreliable, is far, far more challenging.

I get it, we’re all under pressure to plug gaps quickly, for minimal cost. But think about the real cost of making a fast, cheap hire, and ask yourself, is it worth it?
