Blog - From Devon To London For Work Experience

Written by Joe Marshall who joined Reuben Sinclair on work experience in the week commencing 13th July 2015.

Having been born and lived in Devon all my life, the pace in London is extremely surreal to me. Working in Reuben Sinclair for just under a week has been a great experience. I have learnt about how to market a business, I’ve learnt about the world of sales, marketing & PR recruitment and this whole experience has ultimately transformed my perspective of working in an office.

Before now, I had become too tied up in the stereotypical view of office life. I had imagined isolated work places with dull white walls, sat at a desk looking at production figures and growth plans! How wrong I was.

Throughout my stay I have worked closely with the different divisions within Reuben Sinclair. I’ve been included in client meetings and have observed several job interviews. The new business meeting I attended was with a potential future client. The brief that was taken was incredibly detailed and it amazes me how much work goes into finding one candidate for one role! Although, I have to say, listening to the vocabulary and industry ‘speak’ in the meeting was often like learning a new language!

I also enjoyed sitting in two interviews, in which I learnt a huge amount too. Although each interview differed from the other, the formula used to help identify whether the candidate is right for the role or not was consistent and efficient on both occasions.

These experiences, along with my learnings about the processes behind the scenes have given me a whole new view of what ‘office’ life can be.

I believe my experiences here will be massively beneficial to me in the future and will help me to write an exceptional C.V of my own. I now have a better understanding of how to prepare and behave in a job interview and what companies could be looking for in an individual.

Traveling around London on the tube and attending business meetings is a rare opportunity. Not every 15 year old would have experienced these things. But, I have enjoyed getting to know how the corporate world behaves.

This week, I have worked very closely with the new business division in Reuben Sinclair, also linking in with the recruitment delivery team. I have observed the outstanding quality and work ethic of individuals and this has given me a taster of what life will be beyond the walls of a secondary school. I really appreciate Reuben Sinclair giving me the independence to work the way I found most efficient and effective. This freedom helped create a relaxed work environment which I believe highly contrasts the working environment in school.  Working here has given me a set of life skills that I would not have been able to acquire in school.

I would like to thank Reuben Sinclair and all the staff for this opportunity to experience a taster of life working in London. It was not what I was expecting and has well and truly altered my view of working in an office.
