Dos & Don'ts: The Post Interview Follow Up

Following up after an interview for a role you really want. What's the etiquette and how do you maximize the opportunity?

The Post Interview Email

One question I get asked a lot by job seekers is ‘should I follow up after the interview?’ – my advice is, yes, you most absolutely should. Not only does this demonstrate that you are efficient and keen but believe it or not, a lot of candidates don’t, so if you do you will stand out. 

Connecting directly with the hiring managers is also a great idea if you’re using a recruiter. We’re the middle men/women in the recruitment process but ultimately we want you to bond with your future bosses. It will mean more to the hiring team if you follow up and emphasise what we are telling them about your enthusiasm for the role.

On the same day as your interview, send an email direct to the interview panel. The message should thank them for their time and reiterate that you are even more interested in the opportunity (if you are) since meeting with them. If you presented a document during the interview and the panel do not yet have a copy, take this opportunity to attach it.

Don’t ask lots of questions, keep the message short and sweet. You should have asked all your important questions during the interview so remember this is your opportunity to display your excitement for the role, not to ask more questions. If you do have any unanswered questions save them until you know how the interviewers feel about you. 

Ultimately you want to make your potential employers’ life as easy as possible and their decision to hire you even easier. So provide them with all the information they need to make them hire you, be proactive and efficient but most of all display your passion for the role and their company.

Here are some good options that we’ve received from candidates over the years for following up with hiring managers post interview. The last example is a good option if you haven’t heard back in a while:

I wanted to send an email to emphasise how much I enjoyed the interview this morning. Meeting with you and hearing more about your company vision cemented my interest in the role.

If you need any further information from me, please do let me know and I’ll get it to you straight away.

Good afternoon X, 

Thank you so much for your time this morning, it was great to meet with you and X. The interview has made me even more excited about the opportunity.

Attached is my presentation from the interview, for your reference.

Please do let me know if you need anything else from me at this stage and I look forward to hearing from you in regards to the next steps.

Best regards, 

Hi X, 

It was great to meet with you last week to discuss the X role. I just wanted to emphasise how much I am interested in the opportunity. Please let me know if you require any more information to make your decision. I am also very happy to come and meet the team again, if required.
