The best way to prepare for an interview is to make sure you know how you will answer the questions that are likely to come your way.  As a PR recruiter, I know what sorts of questions crop up, so if you want the job then I suggest you take a look at the below questions and make sure you have compelling answers ready to go.

Entry level questions

  1. Why do you want a career in PR?
  2. Can you tell me about a recent PR campaign that you thought worked well and why
  3. Can you tell me about a recent PR campaign that you thought failed and why
  4. What current news stories would you want to hijack for xxx client
  5. What writing experience do you have in PR?
  6. How would you prioritize and start your work day?
  7. How would you go about finding relevant contacts and sources?
  8. Which PR firms do you admire and why?
  9. Which media outlets do you follow?
  10. Which PR figures do you admire and why?

Mid-level questions

  1. What areas of PR or communications do you see growing/being important in the future?
  2. Can you tell me about a favourite campaign you worked on
  3. How do you measure your personal and team ROI on campaigns?
  4. How much involvement do you have in new business?
  5. What is the value of the new business you have contributed to in the last 12 months?
  6. How would you deal with a PR crisis?
  7. How would you describe public relations to a five year old?
  8. How do you use social media to reach and impress traditional media?
  9. Can you give me 3-5 key publications and/or journalists that you would want to target for xxx client
  10. How is PR different from advertising?

Management/Director questions

  1. What media win are you most proud of?
  2. Tell me about a time when you had to overcome a challenge with an individual or group when developing and executing a PR campaign?
  3. What was the most difficult situation you have been in when responding to media and public enquiries. What made it difficult? How did you handle it?
  4. What are the advantages and disadvantages of appointing a PR consultancy?
  5. What would you consider to be your most creative or effective campaign?
  6. What would you do if a client or manager disagreed with your PR strategy?
  7. Describe a time you had to manage negative media attention.
  8. Describe a time your PR communications were misunderstood by your target audience. How did you handle it?
  9. Who are the current members of your team? What are their respective roles?
  10. What’s interesting about our current PR work? What would you improve?
